Kuwait, Politics, 4/18/2005
Several former and current members of the Kuwaiti parliament decided to establish a special unit to fight corruption so as the Ummah council (parliament) will be the third Arab parliament to take this step following the Palestinian legislative council, and the Yemeni parliament.
The new unit is considered a local branch for what is called the international parliamentarians organization to fight corruption which was established in 2002.
Member of the Kuwaiti Ummah council Naser al-Masane' said that the charter to found the Kuwaiti branch will be announced later this month.
Al-Sane' occupied the post of the deputy chairman of the organization and its Arab branch chairman. The organization includes 250 parliamentarian from 72 countries and aims at encouraging credibility, transparency, and integration with the efforts to fighting corruption.
This came amid increasing accusations from the Kuwaiti parliament to several government officials of corruption. Several members of the Kuwaiti Ummah Council demanded in March the deputy premier and the minister of state for the cabinet affairs, Muhammad Deif Allah Sharar, resign after he was accused of mal-administration and corruption. The minister of health Muhammad al-Jarallah resigned under pressures of corruption addressed against him by the parliament.
However, the international transparency organization which takes Berlin as a headquarters, talked in a report in 2004 about notable increase in the rate of corruption in 2004. According to the organization's estimates on corruption, Kuwait occupied rank 44 out of 146 countries.
