Turbulent meeting for the Iraqi parliament
Iraq, Politics, 4/18/2005
Al-Madayen crisis overwhelmed works of the Iraqi National Assembly (parliament) which resumed its works on Sunday morning.
The parliament was presumed to concentrate its discussions to debate its constitution, but the majority of the parliamentarians, especially the Shiite among them who made successive speeches, demanded to add the file of al-Madayen city to the session's agenda.
Parliament member Sheikh Jalal al-Saghir demanded the United Iraqi Coalition list to summon the two ministers of defense and the interior in order to brief the parliament on what is taking place in al-Madayen, accusing the security departments officials of the lack of performance and demanded explanation to what is taking place in southern Baghdad in particular.
At the end of the discussions, the parliament unanimously voted for the formation of a five-member committee to follow up the situation in al-Madayen with the national security council which includes officials from the ministries of the interior and defense, in coordination with the Cabinet.
At the level of the efforts to form the interim government, the prime minister whose term of office had expired, set a precondition that for his list to join the new government, his list would need to assume several main ministries like the defense or the interior and other three ministries and the post of the deputy prime minister.
