Al Ahram Al-Arabi: relations between Morocco, Algeria grow warmer
Morocco-Algeria, Politics, 4/18/2005

The participation of Morocco's King Mohammed VI in the Arab summit, held last March in the Algerian capital, helped Morocco and Algeria take steps toward warmer relations, commented on Friday the Egyptian magazine "Al Ahram Al-Arabi."

The two Maghreban neighbors have been at loggerheads, mainly because of Algeria's support to the Polisario Front in its claims for the separation of Morocco's southern provinces (known as the Sahara) from the rest of the country. The former Spanish colony was retrieved by Morocco in 1975 under accords signed with Madrid and Nouakchott.

An article, titled "New prospects between Morocco and Algeria following the Arab summit," described king Mohammed VI's participation in the coming-together as one of the "strong and positive moments" of the summit.

It led to quick and concrete results as Algeria soon announced the annulment of entry visa for Moroccans, after a similar decision taken by Morocco eight months earlier, noted the magazine.

The two states are on the way of starting a new era marked by "objective and peaceful relations," it underlined.

Citing strategic experts, "Al Ahram Al-Arabi" pointed out that the consolidation of relations between Rabat and Algiers would help promote the Maghreb's role in the region.
