Catalonian official: regularisation of Moroccan emigrants situation proceeds well
Morocco-Spain, Politics, 4/16/2005
The regularisation process of Moroccan emigrants in Spain is proceeding in good conditions, said, in Rabat Thursday, visiting secretary General for emigration in the Catalonian government, Adela Ross.
Some 6,378 regularization files were submitted by Moroccan emigrants livings in Spain since the start of the normalization process on February 7, according to Spanish sources.
This largest normalization process ever launched in Spain may include about 800,000 emigrants living illegally in Spain, including about 100,000 Moroccans.
The government is also working to find a solution to the problem of unattended juveniles, in conformity with the provisions of the international Convention on Children's rights, said the Catalonian official at the end of a meeting with Moroccan Minister delegate in charge of Moroccan expatriates, Nouzha Chekrouni.
Ross, who started Wednesday a three-day visit to Morocco, added that training programs will be organized in the north-eastern Spanish region of Catalonia to inform the Moroccan community on the reform process unfolding in Morocco.
As to Chekrouni, she said that a Moroccan-Catalonian joint group will be set up in the upcoming months to assess the situation of the Moroccan community in Catalonia.
Legal and Illegal emigration was recently discussed by Chekrouni at a series of meetings she held with European officials in Brussels. She insisted at the meetings it is important to address this problem jointly and it is crucial to reinforce dialogue.
In an interview published Friday by the local daily "Liberation," Chekrouni underlined the need to highlight the positive effects of legal emigration, which she described as a "driving force for development."
