Al-Rai al-Am: Abu al-Ghait: we will contain any crisis in Lebanon, work to calm Washington-Damascus issues
Egypt-Regional, Politics, 4/16/2005

In an interview with the Kuwaiti daily "al-Rai al-Am" the Egyptian foreign minister Ahmad Abu al-Ghait said that Egypt is ready to contain any crisis in Lebanon when matters move in a negative way.

He explained that the issues of the Hizbullah weapons is an internal matter and that Cairo seeks to clam down the situation between Damascus and Washington regarding the Iraqi and Lebanese files.

Abu al-Ghait said that the "Egyptian efforts to solve the Lebanese crisis has not and will not stop, and that Egypt is totally familiar with the developments of the situations there, and that if matters move in a non-positive direction, Egypt will move to follow up this development and contain any crisis."

The Egyptian foreign minister considered that the issue of "dismantling the weapons of the Lebanese Hizbullah party as to be dealt with by the Lebanese society itself, especially as Hizbullah is a major force on the Lebanese scene, enjoys a political presence and parliamentarian representation, and therefore no intervention should be made to this point."

He explained that Egypt seeks to "calm down the situation between the US and Syria, and seeks to give Syria the opportunity to get out of this difficult situation and conclude an understanding that will lead to a detente in all elements of the crisis and tension towards the Syria-Iraq or Syria-Lebanon issues."

He said that the "US seeks to support Egypt economically and the one who seeks to do so does not mean harm." He said that the US needs to further understand of conditions of the region and "we will tell them that problems of the region starts with a settlement for the Palestinian issue in a quick and just way."
