Egyptian report on human rights deterioration commended
Egypt-USA, Politics, 4/16/2005
The US on Thursday commended the first annual report issued by a human rights group supported by the Egyptian government, and gave credibility to accusations rumored at a large scale on torture practices at the hands of the police.
The spokesman for the US state department Tom Casey said "we consider that the publishing of this report is a positive step in the political reform operation in Egypt, we were optimistic that this organization gave such a frank assessment for human rights problem in Egypt."
The higher council for human rights in Egypt, which is presided over by the former secretary general of the UN Butrous Ghali issued a tougher report than expected by a group supported by the government but he could not make investigations, himself.
