Lebanese opposition unify ranks against postponing the elections
Lebanon, Politics, 4/15/2005
The Lebanese opposition is preparing to launch a new political fight demanding the making of the Lebanese elections in its due time next month.
The Lebanese opposition on Thursday evening held a meeting to take a unified stand in confrontation of what parliamentarian Naela Mu'awad described as attempts made by the authority to destroy the elections. She indicated that the opposition might also nominate another candidate for presiding over the government. She said that streets sit-ins are to be made.
Parliamentarian Walid Eido, of the bloc of the later Lebanese prime minister Rafic Hariri, stressed that there are contacts in the lines of the opposition to embark on a unified position, adding that among the likely steps against postponing the elections is for the citizens to take the streets.
Political sources said that the parliamentary elections due in May might be postponed for weeks or months. However, Karami said, upon apologizing for not being able to form a government, that time is still available to hold it in the set time.
