Sudanese opposition welcomes taking part in the drafting of the constitution
Sudan, Politics, 4/14/2005

News reports in Khartoum said that the Sudanese government and the Sudan People Liberation Movement (SPLM) have made concessions concerning the percentages stated in the peace agreement between the government and the movement in order to represent the Sudanese political forces, which welcomed that, in the committee to drafting the interim constitution.

These sources did not disclose the new percentages, however, the leading figure in the ruling national party and the chairman of the 6-member committee of the interim constitution, Majzoub al-Khalifa, said that the references on this issue are the peace agreements signed in Nivasha, Kenya. But he said that the new concessions will allow wider participation for the opposition to take part in the formulations of the new Sudanese constitution.

For his part, the spokesman for the SPLM, Yasser Araman, said that amending the percentages aims at getting the opposition involved in formulating the constitution which will allow democratic transformation in the country.

In reaction to the concessions, the opposition parties agreed to take part in the committee. Deputy secretary general of the opposition People's Congress party, Abdullah Hassan Ahmad, said that his party welcomes participation in the membership of the constitution formulation committee.
