Lebanese opposition threats regarding elections delay
Lebanon, Politics, 4/14/2005
The Lebanese opposition threatened to organize massive demonstrations demanding the making of the elections in its due time, accusing Syria's allies of trying to delay the political process.
Lebanese opposition parliamentarian Marwan Hamadeh expressed the concern of the economic sides on the current situation and loomed that the opposition will resort to a general strike.
For his part, Nasib Lahoud, an opposition parliamentarian, warned against the attempts to delay the elections, noting that if the situation continues this way the opposition will resort to the pressure of the street to force Karami to quit his post.
The threats came after Karami's failure to form a government with a mission to monitor the election process. The opposition is persistent to carry out the elections in its set time so as to benefit from the sympathy of the public on the background of the assassination of the former Lebanese prime minister Rafic Hariri.
In the first move for the opposition, its delegation chaired by the leader of the Socialist Progressive Party Walid Junblat, headed to Strasburg in order to discuss the situation in Lebanon with the speaker of the European Parliament Josip Buril and other officials.
After Strasburg, the delegation which also includes two parliamentarians Ghenwa Jalloul and Fares Saeed will head for Paris to complete consultations with officials there.
In another development, six Lebanese parliamentarians proposed to amend the pardoning law on war crimes in order to ensure the release of Samir Ja'ja', the commander of the Lebanese forces of the former al-Kataeb ( phanalagists) party. This is in the course of the efforts made to enhance national reconciliation.
Lebanese Parliamentarian Ni'mat Allah Abu al-Baser said that the speaker of the parliament is now able to debate the proposal for a vote in the nearest public session.
