Highway accidents decreased 6% in 2004

The number of highway accidents in Moroccan decreased 6% in 2004, totalling 1,493 compared to 1,588 the previous year, according to figures of the "Societe Nationale des Autoroutes du Maroc."
The Moroccan Highway Authority said 97 people were killed and some 1,225 others were injured in 2004.
The condition of tires, high speed, disrespect of road signs and weather conditions are the major causes of such accidents, said the same source.
Road accidents in Morocco claim an annual death toll of over 3,800 and injure some 15,000. They also cost the State about USD 1.2b a year, which is 2.5% of the GDP.
