Political vacuum in Lebanon
Lebanon, Politics, 4/13/2005

Lebanon has entered into a political vacuum after disagreements between the Lebanese politicians resulted in a delay in the formation of the new government, where postponing the parliamentary elections due in May has become an increasing possibility.

Differences, in the lines of the side supporting Syria over the ministerial bags and shares in the government, foiled the efforts of the designated Lebanese prime minister Omar Karami, President Emi Lahoud, and the speaker of the parliament Nabeh Berri to announce a government with a basic mission of approving a new law for organizing new parliamentary elections.

Political sources in support of Syria said that Karami has become angry after his efforts failed to form the government and left Beirut for his house in Tripoli.

The sources added that the minister of the interior in the resigned government Suleiman Franjieh refused to return back to his ministry which will supervise the organization of the elections, demanding to get the ministry of health and to appoint one of his allies as a minister.

The Lebanese opposition, which expects to win the great majority in the elections is it will be held at due time, accused the government of deliberate delay in forming the new government in order to delay the elections.

Lebanese parliamentarian Albert Mkheiber admitted that postponement of the elections has become a must because the government has to extend the invitation for making the elections one month before its set date.
