Shalom calls Arab states for normalization, the Palestinians to fight terrorism
Regional-Israel, Politics, 4/13/2005
The Israeli foreign minister Silvan Shalom in the joint press conference with his Egyptian counterpart Ahmad Abu al-Gheit in Cairo referred to what he called the roadmap to normalize relations with the Arab states and asked Egypt to support Israel in this effort.
After his meeting with the Egyptian president in the presence of Abu al-Gheit and the director of the intelligence Omar Suleiman, Shalom urged the Egyptian president to use his influence within the Palestinians in order to remove the fate of the peace process from the hands of what he called terrorists and to bring back moderates.
Regarding the Palestinians, Shalom underlined the importance that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas cooperate with the Israelis in fighting and dismantling the structure of the resistance.
Shalom also stressed the commitment of the Israeli side to the understandings agreed in Sharm al-Sheikh on withdrawals from the Palestinian cities and releasing the Palestinian prisoners.
These statements coincided with other demands raised by the Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon in Washington to Mahmoud Abbas on the need to dismantle what is called the infrastructure of terrorism. Sharon said in a meeting with the American papers chief editors that he has no doubt that "Abbas has different strategy from terrorism that used to be pursued by Arafat."
