Moussa: Arabs reject forced reforms which must be home-grown
Regional, Politics, 4/12/2005

Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa said the 2004 Arab world human development report contains points that will be studied and analyzed, especially pertaining to political conditions in the Arab region.

At a press conference yesterday to comment on the report, Moussa added that the Arab League did not agree with many parts of the report, especially concerning reforms imposed from the outside.

"Arabs reject forced reforms, they want dialogue, cooperation and discussion with foreign parties on reform," he said.

Moussa warned of the gravity of foreign interference that could destabilize the region.

Asked about Egypt's position on the report, he said Egypt did not object to it, but had some reservations. There is neither total Arab rejection nor total Arab acceptance of the report, he added.

Rima Khalaf, UNDP Assistant Secretary General for Arab Affairs, said the aim behind the annual human rights report, now in its third year, is to realize a comprehensive Arab revival in the field of development.

The 2002 report focused on the three missing principles needed for human development, namely freedom, knowledge and empowering women, she added.
