Attempts to bridge between the Sudanese government and Turabi's party
Sudan, Politics, 4/11/2005

The Sudanese government disclosed that there are efforts being made to bring it closer to the opposition People's Congress party led by Hassan al-Turabi who has been in detention without trial for two years.

Qutbi al-Mahdi, the political advisor of President Omar Hassan al-Bashir, said that joint committees representing the two sides are working to achieve this objective. Al-Mahdi did not rule out releasing Turabi as a goodwill gesture by the government, but he added this will be linked to the readiness of the People's Congress to reconcile and maintain dialogue.
