Junblat denies support for UN resolution 1559

The leader of the Lebanese Druz opposition socialist progressive party has been careful to deny accusations addressed to him of supporting UN resolution 1559. He stressed commitment to the Taif accord as a base to organize relations with Syria and organizing inter-Lebanese relations.

Junblat said in press statements that there are fundamental differences between the Taif accord and UN resolution 1559, stressing that the latter does not organize the relations with Syria.

He expressed total rejection to the mechanism proposed by the said resolution over dealing with the Hizbullah weapons, stressing that the decision to extend the term of office for the Lebanese President Emil Lahoud was the reason behind the issuance of the resolution.

The Druz leader explained that he considers that Lebanon is still in need in the current phase to Hizbullah weapons, and that an agreement to be made in later stages on measures during which this party can be integrated into the Lebanese military establishments.

Junblat also stressed his cling to the need of making the presidential elections in their due time in May. He said that the Lebanese opposition will cooperate with the UN committee in charge of investigating the assassination of the former Lebanese prime minister Rafic Hariri. He also stressed attachment to his demands for removing certain security department leaders whom he said had committed violations that contributed to the deterioration of security conditions in Lebanon.

He also called on the Lebanese opposition to meet in order to agree on a common vision after the end of the Syrian withdrawal from Lebanon. He stressed the need of reaching this vision especially concerning the Hizbullah weapons, the Palestinian question and the question of settling the Palestinians in Lebanon.
