Unidentified group claims responsibility for Cairo explosion

A group calling itself "Katab al-Izz al-Islameyah in Ard al-Nil" ( The Islamic glory's groups in the lands of the Nile) claimed in a statement on the Internet responsibility for the explosion which took place on Thursday evening in al-Azhar area in Cairo, in which three persons were killed including two foreign tourists.

The group said that one of its members, called Abu al-Ala al-Masri, carried out the explosion which it described as a suicide attack in protest of what it described the tyranny of the government of President Hosni Mubarak and the American policies in the region.

The group said that its has a video tape showing the operation and will be broadcasted shortly and vowed to carry out other operations.

Meantime, the Egyptian opposition strongly deplored al-Azhar quarters explosions and called on the government not to exploit it in order to obstruct the political reforms in Egypt.

The Egyptian movement for the change "Kefaya" ( enough) called for finding out the reality of the incident warning the government against using this incident as a pretext to "prolonging the age of tyranny, oppression and continued state of emergency and obstructing the march of the Egyptian people towards freedom and democracy." In a statement, Kefaya accused what it called the forces of tyranny, corruption and external and internal hegemony of standing behind this attack. The statement asserted people's demands for political and constitutional reforms.

The Muslim Brothers groups also deplored the al-Azhar attack and called for the unity of ranks in confrontation of attempts targeting the country's stability and security.

The general guide of the Muslim Brothers group Muhammad Mahdi Akef said in a statement that "the incident should not be a reason for obstructing the move of the society towards achieving its goals and demands for freedom, democracy and justice."
