Mubarak intensifies efforts for comprehensive reconciliation in Sudan
Egypt-Sudan, Politics, 4/8/2005

Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak discussed at his meeting yesterday with Sudanese Foreign Minister Moustafa Othman Ismail the developments in the Sudan mainly the Darfur crisis, the UN Security Council resolution on the Sudan and the six way summit on Darfur which will be held in Sharm el- Sheikh.

President Mubarak had got a telephone call from Sudanese President Omar Al Bashir during which they tackled ways of achieving comprehensive Sudanese reconciliation in the Sudan and the Sharm el-Sheikh summit on Darfur.

Following the meeting Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul -Gheit said the President's meeting with the Sudanese Foreign Minister focussed on the position in the Sudan in general and in Darfur in particular, indicating that the Darfur summit could be expanded to become a six way one after the accession by Gabon to Egypt, the Sudan, Nigeria, Libya and Chad.

Abul-Gheit said much argument has been raised on how Africa and the Arab world would take the Security Council resolution No 1593 on trying the defendants accused of perpetrating war crimes in Darfur before the International Criminal Court. He said the court would level charges but if the judiciary in the state concerned played its role properly, there would be no need for the international court.

Abul-Gheit said there are many axes for working on the Sudanese state of affairs:

First one is Nevasha axis on the peace agreement between the government and the People's Movement, the second one is Darfur axis where there is willingness to encourage the government and opposition to return to negotiations table.

Abul -Gheit said Egypt calls on the international community to encourage both parties not to lose time.

He said the third axis is related to Eastern Sudan, indicating that there are moves to this respect.

The Foreign Minister said Egypt has been effectively seeking to control the crisis in cooperation with powers such as Nigeria, Libya, and Chad adding that the more the international community become involved in the Sudanese affair, the more it will become deeper.

He said that the African Union is acting according to its potentials that some of the latest Security Council resolutions on the Sudan were positive and others were negative adding that the issue of applying sanctions is not helpful to achieving stability and peace in the Sudan.

Meantime, the Sudanese government said it would declare its final stance towards the Security Council resolutions on Darfur on Sunday.

Sudanese Foreign Minister Moustafa Ismail said in statements in Khartoum that the Sudanese government has not yet declared its final stance on the Security Council resolution 1593.

The Sudanese Foreign Minister told Al -Ahram that President Mubarak told him that Egypt would continue its contributions on Darfur and renewed Egypt's support for the Sudanese government politically and diplomatically.

He said President Mubarak asserted the legal rule that any citizen must be tried inside his country and the Sudan is not an exception.

In New York, the United Nations Secretary General handed over the Prosecutor General of the International Criminal Court the names of 51 defendants accused of committing war crimes in Darfur.
