Al-Azhar, Christian clerics: no compulsion in religion
Regional-USA, Religion, 4/8/2005

Chairman of Al-Azhar Inter-faith Committee Sheikh Fawzi El- Zefzaf signed yesterday the document of "Religious Rights" with visiting US Christian clerics.

The 17-item document denounced violence and condemned extremism. It also said that everyone shall enjoy the right to choose his or her religion with no compulsion.

Meantime, Grand Imam of Al Azhar Sheikh Mohamed Sayed Tantawi says that Al Azhar welcomes the conducting of a permanent dialogue to correct misconceptions about creeds.

He said that Allah had created all people and told them to cooperate on spreading love and peace.

The Grand Imam said that difference in creeds does not prevent cooperation among people, because Allah is the only party that asks people about their deeds.
