NGOs stress the need to help sequestrated populations in Polisario camps

Members of several Moroccan human rights NGOs stressed here Tuesday the need to upgrade their actions in favour of the populations held against their will in the Polisario Tindouf camps.

At a conference held in the Swiss capital on "Human Rights in Morocco: the Role of Civil Society," Fatima Maghnaoui of the Union of Feminine Action (UAF), said the new Family Code in Morocco can be "regarded as a revolution with historic implications," notably owing to the benefits it secures to women.

She expressed the resolve of her organisation to further work for the ending of the tragedy lived by the populations sequestrated in Tindouf camps and the many violations they suffer at the hands of the Polisario separatist movement.

Ali Amar of the Moroccan Association of Human Rights (AMDH) said the Justice and Reconciliation Commission in charge of shedding light on past violations (1956-1999) is doing a good job, but more efforts are needed to reconcile the country with its past.

Amar said his association denounced the negative situation of human rights in Tindouf camps and called for the immediate release of the populations sequestrated and prisoners held there.

Mrs Selouka Babekar, member of the Sahrawi Association for the Defence of Human rights, called on NGOs and the international community to intensify action to denounce the serious violations targeting the Tindouf camps populations.

Mrs Ana Maria Cervone of the "International Democrat Centre" said the IDC fully supports the stance of Morocco concerning the serious violations of human rights in the Tindouf camps, asking the international community to act to end the ordeal of the camps popualtions.
