Ayman Nour accuses the national party of obstructing his election campaign
Egypt, Politics, 4/6/2005

The leader of al-Ghad Egyptian opposition party, Ayman Nour, accused the ruling democratic national party of obstructing his campaign as a rival for President Hosni Mubarak in the presidential elections by portraying Nour as an American hireling.

Nour said that the supporters of the ruling democratic national party burnt the American flag in front of the headquarters of al-Ghad party and tore tires of cars used in the party's election campaigns.

In statements, Nour said that the supporters of the national party followed his election campaigns chanting slogans saying that he is "the son of Madeline Albright " and the "boyfriend of the US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice." Nour said he is the target of "a campaign accusing him of being a hireling to the west and the USA," which, according to him is not correct, adding that the public opinion in Egypt does not pay attention to such statements.

Nour, a member in the parliament, faces fraud charges that the judiciary will rule on in June.

Nour said that the trial will not affect his election campaign which will end before the fall of the elections, adding he will convert his trial into an electoral Marathon.
