Creation of a Moroccan-Mexican Friendship Group
Morocco-Mexico, Politics, 4/2/2005
A Moroccan-Mexican Friendship Group was created at the Mexican House of Representatives on the occasion of the visit to Mexico of a Moroccan parliamentary delegation of the Socialist Alliance.
At the end of the constituent ceremony, President of the group and representative of the National Action party (PAN), Miguel Angel Rangel Avila told MAP that Morocco and Mexico enjoy good relations "as manifested by the official visits of king Mohammed VI to Mexico and Mexican President, Vicente Fox to Morocco."
The Friendship Group will further reinforce bilateral relations between the two governments and their legislative institutions.
Earlier, the Moroccan delegation met a member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party "PRI"(a party in power for 71 years), Samuel Aguilar Solis who expressed support to Morocco's territorial integrity and to a "negotiated political solution within the framework of the United Nations" of the Sahara issue and called to further reinforce bilateral economic relations.
The parliamentary delegation of the Socialist Alliance group, led by Mohamed Ahajjam, shed light during its meetings with Mexican officials on the issue of Morocco's territorial integrity and the situation of Moroccans sequestered in the Tindouf camps (Southwest of Algeria) and handed to Mexican officials a document comprising testimonies of human rights violations committed in the Tindouf camps.
An Algerian-backed movement that calls itself "Polisario" has been claiming the separation of the Moroccan Southern provinces (known as the Sahara) from the motherland since 1976. In 1975 Morocco retrieved the Sahara from Spanish rule under the Madrid accords concluded with Spain and Mauritania.
The Moroccan delegation briefed also Mexican officials on the political, economic and social reforms ushered in Morocco and discussed the opportunities of promoting bilateral cooperation, especially in parliamentary action and trade exchanges.
During its Mexican visit, the delegation met several Mexican officials notably deputy-Speaker of Mexican Senate, Carlos Chaurand Arzate, President of Foreign Relations Commission Europe-Africa, Laura Alicia Garza Galindo and President of "Colosio" foundation, Beatriz Paredes.
Mexico is the last leg of the Moroccan delegation tour (March 12-31) that already took them to Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador and the United States of America.
The Socialist Alliance gathers MPs from socialist leaning parties, namely the Socialist Union for Popular Forces, the Party for Progress and Socialism and "Al Ahd" Party.
