On Larsen's missions to Lebanon
Lebanon-UN, Politics, 4/2/2005
Drastic developments are taking place in Lebanon at a time when the UN special envoy to the Middle East Terry Rod Larsen assigned to follow up the implementation of UN resolution 1559 arrives in the region carrying a message to the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and to the Lebanese President Emil Lahoud.
A spokesman for the UN secretary general said that Larsen will visit also each of Cairo and Amman.
The visit coincided with the UN Security Council discussion of the draft resolution studied by France and backed by Washington and London to forming an international investigations committee in the assassination of Rafic Hariri.
News reports in New York quoted sources at the UN Security Council that the draft resolution which will be submitted to the UN Security Council within the two coming days and put for voting by the beginning of next week, demands the Lebanese government to collaborate with the committee and to account for the persons and officials involved in the assassination on February 14 of Hariri.
The draft resolution avoided mentioning Syria in name and confined to calling on all government "to collaborate with the investigation committee."
