Lebanon-Syria, Politics, 4/2/2005
The Lebanese opposition Druz leader Walid Junblat stressed his rejection to any Israeli-Western project or non-Israeli one aiming at attacking Syria's stability, calling for establishing strong relations between the two neighboring states.
Junblat said that Syria's stability and security is a fundamental issue because it is closely linked to Lebanon's security, according to the Taif accord. Junblat added he opposes UN resolution 1559 which calls for dismantling the weapons of the militias in Lebanon including Hizbullah. He warned against the consequences that certain Lebanese sides relying on this resolution. The Druz leader explained that dismantling the weapons of Hizbullah need a calm dialogue between the Lebanese themselves and this is a matter which is not under negotiations at the meantime.
This came hours after the defiance of the secretary general of the Hizbullah party to the US sending forces to Lebanon to implement its call to dismantle the weapons of Hizbullah.
Hassan Nasrullah said, in a massive conference in Beirut to celebrate the first assassination anniversary of the founder of the Hamas movement Ahmad Yassin, that the weapons of the resistance in Lebanon can not be dismantled besides the weapons of resistance in Palestine and the weapons of the Palestinian camps in Lebanon which he described as a defensive weapon.
