Morocco, Turkey sign several cooperation agreements
Morocco-Turkey, Economics, 4/1/2005
Morocco and Turkey signed, in Rabat on Wednesday, four agreements in health, vegetal and veterinary health as well as in road infrastructure. The agreements were signed at a meeting between the two countries Premiers, Driss jettou and visiting Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
The two parties also agreed to set up a joint working committee to identify and assess cooperation activities and to this end will convene once a year.
At a dinner hosted Wednesday night in the honour of the Turkish Prime minister, Jettou renewed call to economic operators in the two countries to tap business opportunities provided for in bilateral accords, including the free trade agreement. The Moroccan Premier said he was confident the two-day visit of Erdogan to Morocco will give impetus to new exchange dynamics.
Jettou spoke of the Turkish government efforts to become member of the European Union, adding that Morocco also aspires to stronger relations with the union higher than the current associated country status.
The Prime minister stressed that Morocco remains attached to the Arab Maghreb Union (UMA) owing to the economic and trade assets of the regional grouping and the Moroccan will to overcome obstacles hindering the materialisation of "this political and economic ambition."
In this line, Jettou said, Morocco keeps on working for reaching "a political and lasting solution to the Moroccan Sahara issue that takes into account the territorial integrity of our country and full sovereignty over its territory."
The Turkish Premier said he is resolved to develop relations between the two countries through contributing to regional peace and securing stability.
He said the signing of the Turkish-Moroccan FTA is "a decisive turning point for trade exchanges" between the two countries, adding he hopes the enforcement of the FTA will "further encourage Turkish businessmen to invest in various fields in Morocco, particularly in the textile industry.
Also on Wednesday, the Turkish Prime minister held talks with Abdelouahed Radi, speaker of the House of Representatives on means to promote and diversify bilateral cooperation and on the role of Morocco and Turkey in maintaining regional peace and stability.
