Lebanese traders strike in denunciation of explosions
Lebanon, Politics, 4/1/2005

Trade sectors in Beirut and the Mount of Lebanon on Wednesday observed a one day strike in denunciation for the explosions that took place in Lebanon following the assassination of the Lebanese prime minister Rafic Hariri.

Observation of the strike varied slightly between Beirut's quarters. While certain trade shops opened their doors in al-Hamra area, Verdan, Mar Elias, al-Ashrafeyah, and Furn al-Shubbak witnessed total closure.

The strike was carried out at the invitation of Beirut's traders association and the associations of Mount of Lebanon traders following explosions targeting trade and industrial areas in al-Jdeida and al-Boushreyah areas in the Christian northern quarters of Beirut and in al-Kaslik, near the Christian quarters of Jounyeh.

In a statement, the society expressed the denunciation of the trade sector to the explosions in areas of markets and trade establishments and for targeting the process of people's peace and for destabilizing trade and the national economy.

The statement called for disclosing those who stand behind the explosions and take necessary security measures in order to preserve the security of citizens and trade establishments. The persons whose properties were damaged as a result of the explosions called on the state to compensate them.
