Moroccan MPs brief Latin-American officials on Sahara issue
Morocco-Latin America, Politics, 3/31/2005

Visiting Moroccan parliamentary delegation has briefed high-ranking officials in five Latin American countries about the progress of the issue of Morocco's territorial integrity.

Made up of representatives of the Socialist Alliance Group, the delegation arrived Tuesday to Mexico City, last leg of a tour that led the delegation, since March 11, to Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador and the United States of America.

At a meeting held in the United States with the Organization of American States (OAS), the delegation had called on the OAS to intervene for the liberation of the Moroccans sequestered in the Tindouf camps (Southwest of Algeria).

OAS officials had promised to deeply examine this issue after they saw the importance Morocco grants to this question and to the liberation of Moroccans sequestered by the Polisario in Tindouf.

An Algerian-backed movement that calls itself "Polisario" has been claiming the separation of the Moroccan Southern provinces (known as the Sahara) from the motherland since 1976. In 1975 Morocco retrieved the Sahara from Spanish rule under the Madrid accords concluded with Spain and Mauritania.

The parliamentary delegation also briefed officials in the five countries about the democratic process launched by the north African kingdom, and the socio-economic progress that Morocco made.

The meetings also discussed the opportunities of promoting bilateral cooperation, especially in parliamentary action and trade exchanges.
