Turkish premier calls achieving MidEast peace
Regional-Turkey, Politics, 3/31/2005

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan called on Wednesday to establish the just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East.

In a meeting with his Tunisian counterpart Mohammed al-Ghannoushi, Erdogan underlined Turkey's support to solving conflicts and problems in a peaceful way particularly those related to the Middle East and Cyprus.

For his part, al-Ghannoushi announced his country's backing for the UN Secretary General plan to unify the island of Cyprus.

Erdogan' s remarks came in the second day of his two-day visit to Tunisia.

Earlier this week, the New York Times reported that "A new effort to reunify Cyprus moved closer to reality after Greece publicly threw its weight behind fresh talks based on a United Nations plan that failed last year. The Greek foreign minister, Petros Molyviatis, said after meeting with Secretary General Kofi Annan that 'everybody now agrees' that reunification talks for the divided Mediterranean island should be started again."

Meantime, "The Turk feels himself at home when he is in Syria mainly after ties developed and cemented between the two countries," a Turkish newspaper said on Wednesday.

Turkish newspaper Yeni Safak underlined in a report on Syria the strong ties of friendship that connect the two countries by religion, culture and one geography.
