Khartoum criticizes UN resolution; US recognition of International Criminal Court jurisdiction
Sudan-UN, Politics, 3/31/2005

The Sudanese government said that the UN Security Council imposed sanctions, on individuals responsible for crimes against civilians in Darfur and those who violate the truce there, would make the matter more complex and does not solve the problem.

Meantime the main rebel movement in the district called for imposing sanctions on the Sudanese government itself.

In a statement to al-Jazeera TV, the Sudanese minister of information Abdul Baset Sdeirat regretted Washington's proposing the draft resolution to the UN Security Council just one day after its request to normalize relations with Khartoum.

The Sudanese ambassador at the UN, al-Fateh Arwa, considered that this resolution was issued under the pressure of the American congress which does not know the history and culture of the people .. or does not want to understand it."

The spokesman for the rebel Sudan's Liberation Movement, Mahjoub Hussein, announced his group's welcome of the resolution and considered it as not enough to put an end to the standing conflict in the district, demanding tougher sanctions against the Sudanese government and not only on individuals.

Meantime, The New York Times reported that today, a UN Security Council resolution sponsored by France, with strong support from other countries, would be voted on and approved. The "resolution that would authorize the prosecution of Sudanese war crimes suspects by the International Criminal Court -- with approval virtually certain after the United States apparently dropped its objections," a decision that, if approved, defacto, forces US recognition of the International Criminal Court jurisdiction, a decision it has opposed in the past as it considers this court an unaccountable international body.
