Tantawi: Man, woman equal in Islam
Egypt-Regional, Religion, 3/29/2005
The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Sheikh Mohamad Sayyed Tantawi said men and women are fully equal in Islam. Addressing a symposium organized by the Faculty of Humanities of Al-Azhar University on Sunday, the Grand Imam said that equality between the two sexes lay in several areas, such as the right to education, work, dignity, human rights and duties.
Scientific distinction is by no means a male prerogative, Tantawi said. On her part, Dr. Samia El Guindi, the rapporteur of the symposium, stressed the importance of putting in place legislation ensuring equal opportunities between the genders.
