Lebanon-Regional, Local, 3/28/2005

Al-Jazeera satellite TV office in Beirut received a telephone threat of blowing the building which includes the offices of media establishments in the downtown of the capital Beirut, if the station will not stop covering news of the explosion of the booby trapped car explosion in the industrial al-Boushreyah, to the east of Beirut, which resulted in killing two persons and injuring other 8.

The director of al-Jazeera office which is situated in front of the government building the downtown of Beirut said that the person who telephoned "threatened the office where we stay if you do not keep silence and continue to cover such events we will blow you up." He indicated that the Lebanese security forces cordoned the building immediately.

For his part, the spokesman for al-Jazeera, Jihad Ballout, said that the person whose identity was not disclosed talked by telephone with the telecommunication office in the building early morning today. Ballout added that al-Jazeera is one of the mass media outlets located in the building which received the threat.

Ballout explained that al-Jazeera office in Beirut works normally, noting that workers in the office do not feel they are vulnerable or fear anything.

This threat came after al-Jazeera made intensive coverage for the attack which took place in al-Noushreyah quarters in the Christian area, and made a telephone interview with the Druz leader Walid Junblat who held the Lebanese security forces and the Syrian intelligence responsibility for the attack.
