Jounalist Lmrabet should amend for his serious mistakes toward journalism profession, SNMP SG
Morocco, Politics, 3/25/2005

Journalist Ali Lmrabet should amend for the serious mistakes he made vis-a-vis the journalism profession by slandering colleagues from the Moroccan news agency, Moroccan press union (SNMP) Secretary General, Younes Moujahid said on Thursday.

Moujahid told "Aujourd'hui le Maroc" daily the accusations of Ali Lmrabet, alleging that Madrid-based MAP correspondents are "snitches," "are very serious, because among the journalists he attacked, there were some (SNMP members) who supported Lmrabet when he went on hunger strike."

SNMP Secretary General said Lmrabet attacked MAP when he accused its correspondents to be "cops," which is intolerable and which harms all the profession.

As to MAP Managing Director, Mohamed Khabbachi, he said Lmrabet allegations are "scandalous," describing them as "a form of intellectual terrorism, which we, as journalists, have to denounce," for they flout all ethic rules.

Khabbachi added, in a statement to the daily, Lmrabet "attacked colleagues known for their professionalism" without any evidence and by doing so he also attacked the Moroccan community residing in Spain.

In a clarification note, Madrid MAP Correspondents denounced the "media lynching" initiated against them by Journalist Ali Lmrabet who alleged in an "El Mundo" ran story that they report on their countrymen.

In the note sent to the Spanish daily on March 15, which El Mundo has not yet published, the correspondents affirm Lmrabet is "free to speculate and to find, at any price, a link between the Moroccan regime and intelligence and the Madrid bombings of March 11, 2004."

"But to involve Moroccan journalists in the alleged conspiracy, is an irresponsible levity that no journalist respecting himself and keen on a minimum of ethic sense could commit," said the correspondents.

The SNMP condemned on Tuesday the slanders made by Ali Lmrabet, and voiced solidarity with MAP colleagues as well as support to "any drive they intend to make to defend their reputation, dignity and the honour of the profession they exercise."

The press union asked El Mundo Director to carry the clarification note to "restore truth and make up for the moral harm" suffered by MAP colleagues and to do justice to journalism ethic rules.
