Mission report on the Hariri assassination calls for international investigation
Lebanon-UN, Politics, 3/25/2005
The report which was submitted by the chairman of the facts finding commission, deputy commissioner of the police in Ireland, Peter FitzGerald, to the UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan, regarding the international investigation on the investigation of the Hariri assassination described the Lebanese investigation as shameful.
The report said that the Lebanese investigation made great mistakes and could not conclude results that can be credible.
It held Damascus responsible for the tension which overwhelmed Lebanon in the period which preceded the assassination of Hariri.
News reports in New York said that the report which falls in 20 pages does not give the answer waited for by many in Lebanon on who had killed Hariri.
It explained that the report rules out the incident to have taken place by a suicide operation, rather was as a result of a car which was stationed on the road side carrying 1000 kg of explosives, noting that explosives were placed over the land, rather than under it as stated earlier.
The report indicates mistakes committed by the security forces when it moved the exploded car from its place. A matter which obstructed the operations of disclosing the crime.
In its report, the committee gave no prediction on the identity of the executors of the assassination, but explained that this operation might be implemented by a TNT explosive of almost one ton weight.
