Syria does not fear the repetition of the Iraqi scenario
Syria-Lebanon, Politics, 3/24/2005

The Syria foreign minister Farouk al-Shara said on the sideline of the Arab summit which is held in Algeria that the Western states, especially the USA, try to target Syria "but they will not succeed in their attempt because they lack pretexts and justification."

Al-Shara added that Syria does not fear the repetition of the Iraqi scenario because there is not any of the pretexts for it that they used in targeting Iraq, noting that "what they have of allegations against Syria is just lies, and therefore the repetition of Iraq's scenario is totally ruled out."

Al-Shara stressed that the Syrian military presence in Lebanon is not an occupation, and that all know that Syria's presence in the Lebanese territories was an implementation for an agreement with the legitimate government in Lebanon and according to the Taif agreement which put an end to the destructive civil war in Lebanon.

He said "we want to get out of this sisterly country but with an agreement with the legitimate authorities in Lebanon." He added "this will be eventually made within the coming few weeks."
