Ayman Nour is brought before the Egyptian criminal court over falsification
Egypt, Politics, 3/23/2005

The Egyptian attorney general has brought the opposition Egyptian parliamentarian and chairman of al-Ghad party, Ayman Nour, and other 6 persons to the criminal courts over accusation of falsifying papaers related to the party's foundation permit.

The attorney general Maher Abdul Wahid said that he decided to ban Nour from traveling, noting that reports proved he gave 1435 false papers, enabling him to found al-Ghad part in October 2004.

Commenting on the decision of the attorney, Nour said that filing the case to the criminal court will not affect the question of his nomination for the presidential elections due to be held in September this year.

He attributed the timing of addressing accusations against him to that he has asked the authorities to permit him to travel for talking before the European parliament which extended an invitation to him to attend the meeting of human rights committee in the parliament to discuss his case.

For his part, the secretary general of the Independent Egyptian Human Rights committee, Hafez Abu Saadah, said that the decision to accuse Nour indicate that the authorities fear that this will be an electoral threat, stressing that the authorities sent a message to the public opinion that he is a strong candidate, describing what is taking place as "a bad sign for democracy in Egypt." Worthy mentioning that the attorney general in Egypt decided to release the leader of al-Ghad part on March 12 at a guarantee after he had spent 40 days in prison.
