Regional-Regional, Politics, 3/23/2005
In a memorandum addressed to the Arab summit held in Algeria, the Lebanese opposition called for complete withdrawal of the Syrian forces from Lebanon before the parliamentary elections expected in May, holding Damascus responsible for the Lebanese crisis.
In a press conference the Lebanese opposition held in Beirut, Lebanese parliamentarian Marwan Hamadeh said that the memorandum held the "Lebanese authorities which fall under the Syrian mandate a great deal of responsibility over the assassination of the former prime minister Rafic Hariri, repeating demands to form an international investigation committee over the assassination of al-Hariri.
For this purpose a delegation representing the Lebanese opposition headed to Algeria in order to hand over the memorandum to the Arab delegations taking part in the Summit.
Meantime the Maronite Patriarch Nasrullah Sfeir denied that he had asked the US to dismantle the Hizbullah party weapons by means of force.
Sfeir stressed after his coming back to Beirut after he completed visit to the USA and his meeting with the US President George W. Bush and Kofi Annan that the question of dismantling the party's weapons is left to Hizbullah itself after settling Shebaa farms questions which is occupied by Israel.
Meantime, the secretary general of the Lebanese Hizbullah party Sheikh Hassan Nasrullah said that the question of dismantling of the party's weapons as discussed by it for national dialogue is a very positive gesture from the party. However, he warned against foreign intervention especially the American intervention in this case.
