Qathafi inclined to boycott Algeria's Arab summit
Libya-Regional, Politics, 3/18/2005

An Arab diplomatic source in Tripoli disclosed that the Libyan leader col. Muammar al-Qathafi is inclined to boycott the works of the Arab summit to be held on March 22 and 23 in Algeria, noting efforts to convince him to take part.

The source explained in statements quoted on Thursday that the Algerian government is exerting intensive efforts to convince the Libyan leader to give up his intention and to attend the summit. It indicated that the Algerian president Abdul Aziz Butaflika expressed his distinguished relations with al-Qathafi.

Al-Qathafi had withdrawn from the previous Arab summit which was held in May last year just a short time after its inauguration announcing his rejection of the timetable. Libya has repeatedly expressed its desire to withdraw from the Arab League, stressing it prefers to focus its efforts to on Africa, considering that the establishments of the Arab League are unable to carry out any joint Arab action. Qathafi has said that some Arab leaders merely give lip service to joint Arab action, while they prevent effective reform of the Arab League to that end.
