Washington inclines for establishing full diplomatic relations with Libya
Libya-USA, Politics, 3/17/2005

The US President George W. Bush administration notified that Congress on its intention to establish full diplomatic relations with Libya, despite doubts around Libya's involvement in the assassination attempt of the Saudi crown prince Abdullah.

It is expected that the American ambassador will be sent to Tripoli to take with him other 19 embassy employees now existed in one of Tripoli's hotels to an interim headquarters with the fall of spring, according to the US under secretary of state William Burns statements to the international relations committee in the Congress.

The American administration will ask for transferring necessary funds necessary to build a new embassy in Libya, expected to be completed by the fall of 2009. Burns notified the committee that the Libyan openness helped in developing the ability to understand the world black market for weapons technology, noting that he had tested the Libyan promises given to the US in 2003 to the that not to resort to violence of political objectives and that he did not find "any evidence revealing that Libya has broken its promises." Burns indicated that issue of the mass destruction weapons does not constitute a threat to the normalization of Libyan- American relations.

Chairman of the committee Henry Hide said it is important to reward Libya for giving up its program on mass destruction weapons but he admitted that the "situation is not simple," He explained while Libya has actually done the rightful thing by giving the mass destruction weapons, it might continue supporting terrorism. He concluded by saying that "Libya is still one of the most tyrant regimes in the world."
