Karami prevents pro Syria supporters demonstration
Lebanon, Politics, 3/17/2005
The designated Lebanese prime minister Omar Karami is preventing a demonstration by Syria's supporters due tomorrow Friday. He called on the opposition parties to do the same and prevent all its demonstrations.
In a statement, Karami extended an invitation to the opposition, without naming it "to halt moves in the street (demonstratations) and to respond to dialogue," adding he decided to prevent a demonstration which was due in his birth place Tripoli. This step came while the prime minister continues his attempt to avoid a constitutional crisis through work to form a national unity government. A matter which the opposition rejects unless he complies to its conditions.
Parliament opposition members gave a list of demands including an international investigation on the assassination of the former Lebanese prime minister Rafic Hariri, and firing leaders of the security intelligence department. The opposition set these conditions to be met so as to join any government.
Karami said he prefers to give his resignation rather to form a "one color" government, but he refused, simultaneously to accept conditions set by the opposition for its consent to form the government.
