Iraq, Politics, 3/15/2005

The council of Najaf governorate asked the new Iraqi National Council to offer the Shiite clergy Ali al-Seistani the Iraqi nationality.

The deputy chairman if the governorate council Sheikh Khaled al-Nu'mani said that "the council decided unanimously to submit a memorandum to the national assembly ( parliament) which will hold its first session this week in which we demand giving Ali al-Seistani ( who is Iranian) and the two other Shiite clergies Bashir al-Najafi ( Pakistan) and Ishaq al-Fayyadi ( Afghanistan) the Iraqi nationality and we will demand that this question will be on top of issues to be discussed by the elected national society."

He explained "al-Seistani has been for 55 years in Iraq and that most of countries give its nationality to persons reside in it for five years."
