Jordanian newspapers on the pressures on Syria
Syria-Lebanon, Politics, 3/15/2005

Put on Syria Jordanian newspaper ' al-Dostour' criticized foreign pressures put on Syria and Lebanon, warning against its dangerous repercussions on the security of Lebanon and the region.

In an article published on Monday, the daily asked "why does the campaign against Syria continue particularly after President Bashar al-Assad's latest announcement on the Syrian troops withdrawal from Lebanon?" It added that this premeditated escalation was against Syria and Lebanon's interests, pointing out to the link between the assassination of Former Lebanese Premier Rafic Hariri and the current conspiracies being prepared against the region.

It also said that the image has become clearer by the U.S. Secretary of State's statements in which she expressed her country's readiness to offer military and security aid to fill in the gap after the pullout of the Syrian troops.

The newspaper denounced Israel's intervention in Lebanon's internal affairs, pointing out to Israeli Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister's statements on their government's interest in Syria's withdrawal and intention to reach an agreement with what it called a "free Lebanon." It wondered "how could Lebanon be free at a time Israel occupies part of its lands." "It is strange that Israel talks about the international resolutions at the time it blows them up," the paper added.

For its part, al-Majd newspaper highlighted President Assad's national stances, saying President Assad, through his latest speech, was full of energy, transparency and high morale.

"President al-Assad's decision reflects the Syrian leadership's wisdom and ability to face all the challenges in the region," it stressed, underlining all Arab people's support to Syria under the critical current circumstances.
