Saudi Arabia's details on crown's prince assassination conspiracy
Saudi Arabia-Libya, Politics, 3/15/2005

Saudi Arabia announced on Sunday evening that it is about to complete special investigation on what it described as the Libyan conspiracy to assassinate crown prince Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz in 2003.

The Saudi minister of the Interior prince Nayef Bin Abdul Aziz said that facts will be disclosed, noting that the investigation departments are about to complete set missions. The minister did not indicate the fate of 13 persons who were detained recently and it was decided to try them over the said case.

Washington had asked Tripoli for official clarifications on the Saudi accusations after an American court sentenced to jail the Islamic activist Abdul Rahman al-Amoudi for 33 years imprisonment, in what it said a conspiracy to assassinate crown prince Abdullah. Al-Amoudi stressed before the court that his mission was limited to providing finance to the operation on behalf of Libyan officials.

The US also considered the case an obstacle in the face of lifting Libya's name from what is called by Washington terrorism sponsor stated, and ending sanctions imposed on Tripoli, ultimately.

In December 2004, Riyadh summoned its ambassador in Tripoli and simultaneously expelled the Libyan envoy over the accusations which were denied strongly by Libya.

The case started when one Saudi diplomat disclosed in 2004 what he described as confirmed information to that a Libyan intelligent officer called Muhammad Isamael with the help of other four planned for the assassination of crown prince Abdullah in Mecca in 2003 and allotting one million dollars for that. Ismael could escape to Egypt which arrested him and handed him to the Saudi authorities.
