IER holds new public hearings in Marrakech
Morocco, Politics, 3/14/2005
Justice and Reconciliation Commission (IER) will organize this March 16 new public hearing sessions in the city of Marrakech (Centeral South), where ten victims of past human rights violations, perpetrated between 1956 and 1999, will present their testimonies.
These hearings, to be followed by two sessions in Al Hoceima (North) and Laayoune (South), will focus on human rights abuses committed against the Ittihadi movement, and during the Marrakech lawsuit and the 1984 manifestations, said IER sources.
In an initial declaration, IER had announced the organization of public hearings in Casablanca, Tan-Tan (south), Smara (South), Fez (Center) and Tetouan (North). This schedule change was imposed by the intensity of the programme that IER is tackling, particularly the issue of the disappeared persons and of individual and collective indemnities.
In parallel to the public hearings, IER will also hold, on March 16, a new dialog session on the theme: "Reform of the legislative, executive and judicial authorities in order to turn the page of past human rights abuses."
