Lebanon-Syria, Politics, 3/14/2005
The Lebanese foreign minister Mahmoud Hamoud said that the Syrian forces will not complete its withdrawal from Lebanon before the convening of a meeting between Syria and Lebanese military officials on April 7th which will define the final date for this operation.
Hammoud stressed after his meeting with the UN secretary general special envoy Terry Rod Larsen in Beirut that the said meeting will "discuss the period and place" of the forthcoming withdrawals.
Meantime, the Lebanese foreign minister stressed support for the Lebanese resistance in "confrontations of the continued Israeli aggressions" refusing classification of the resistance and Hizbullah within the categories of militias, as advocated by UN resolution 1559 in order to dismantle its weapons.
Also in this respect, one Lebanese military official explained that the said meeting will give suggestions to the two countries governments on redeployment of so far remaining Syrian forces in the Lebanese Bekaa plain, estimated at 10 thousands soldiers.
The official added that the number of Syrian troops so far withdrawn from Lebanon reached 4,000 while other 4,000 were deployed from the Mount of Lebanon to the Bekaa in order to join other 6,000 originally existing in the area.
