Moroccan Sufi quartet stars at New Delhi International Sufi Music Festival
Regional, Local, 3/11/2005

Moroccan quartet "Ibn Arabi" opened, in New Delhi Thursday, the International Sufi Music Festival themed "Sufism Traditions."

The Tangier quartet wowed connoisseurs who were introduced to the magical Moroccan heritage of Sufi music that gained fame through the World Sacred Music Festival held annually in Fez.

The Group's renditions of the poetry of Ibn Arabi where the spirited and emotion-filled voice of the singer were mingled with the vibrations of "Kaanoun," violin and flute echoed in the Kamani auditorium in a wonderful hymn to life and love.

Marked by Andalusian rhythms, Ibn Arabi music starred for more than an hour divulging Sufism secrets as a lighthouse for humanity.

The second part of the opening ceremony was marked by folklore Sufi music interpreted by "Langas" and "Mangniyars" groups from Indian state of Rajasthan.

A group of the international artists notably from Morocco, India, Egypt, Iran, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Turkey and Tunisia are participating in the week-long festival.

The Moroccan group that will star in Indian states of Jaipur and Jammu will be back to New Delhi for the closing ceremony on March 15.

Organised by the Delhi government and the Rumi Foundation, the festival is an attempt to spread Sufi message of love.

Not bound by any particular religious belief, Sufism is a philosophy that glorifies every religion as the path to righteousness. It gives precedence to love for humanity above everything else.
