As preparations are underway to convene the periodical Arab summit in Algeria on march 22, Jordan prepares to propose an amended formula for the Arab peace initiative which was adopted at the Beirut's summit in 2002.
The Jordanian foreign minister Hani al-Malqi said that the initiative is still under preparations and that as soon as it is completed before the summit Amman would be able to talk about it in details.
In Cairo Arab diplomats said that they did not see any specific proposals from the Jordanian sides over the amendments to form the initiative. The sources explained that the idea was not exposed to the meeting if the Arab foreign ministers which was held in Cairo last week in preparations for Algeria's summit.
Beirut's summit of 2002, adopted the initiative of the Saudi crown prince Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz which gives Israel full recognition and normal relations with all Arab states for withdrawal until the borders of 1967 borders war. However, the government of Ariel Sharon refused the Arab initiative and its immediate refusal came in implementing an incursion of the West Bank.
In an interview with the Israeli TV several days ago, the Jordanian King Abdullah said that the original initiative which was approved by the Arab leaders at Beirut's summit in 2002 is still standing. But he added it needs to be clearer. The Jordanian king said he was surprised that the Arab proposal had no had great impact on the Israeli society.
On the other hand, Algerian sources said that the higher representative in the European Union Javier Solana and the Spanish prime minister Jose Louis Thapateiro will attend the Arab summit.
Thapateiro will deliver a speech at the summit's opening session in which he will propose a suggestion to establish an alliance of civilizations that won the support of the Arab league, according to a well-informed Spanish source. Solana will discuss with the Algerian President Abdul Aziz Butaflika on the sideline of the summit the developments of the situations in the Middle East, Iraq and Lebanon.
