Stolen Pharaonic monuments handed over to Egypt delegation in London
Egypt, Local, 3/10/2005

A delegation from Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities arrived in London Wednesday to receive eight ancient Egyptian antiques, which were recovered from an auction hall in Britain after they were posted on an Internet website in preparation for selling them.

Egypt's ambassador to Britain Jihad Madi said that the antiques were stolen from the museum of the Faculty of Arts, Cairo University, in 2002 and smuggled abroad.

The ambassador said that the priceless pieces were restored in accordance with law 117 of 1983 protecting Egyptian antiquities.

In statements to MENA correspondent in London yesterday, the ambassador said that the British government understood Egypt's keenness on restoring the smuggled monuments.

The ambassador said that Egypt restored from the British police in 2004.619 Pharaonic pieces after seizing them at Heathrow airport.
