Algeria, Local, 3/10/2005
At least two persons were killed and other nine were missing including five children in the worst floods in the Algerian desert to the south of the country since more than 45 years.
The Algerian radio said on Wednesday that members of the civilian protection rescued 6 persons and transported more than 100 families to public establishments after the collapse of their houses as a result of heavy rains on Sunday evening in Tamnsast estate, 1900 Km to the south of the capital Algiers.
The radio added that more than 25 houses were demolished, while the telephone and electricity networking were greatly damaged, and many roads became unfit for traffic. The authorities were obliged to use helicopter to transport 70 passengers from the devastated areas while land roads could not be used, covered by the water.
On the other hand, the heavy rains caused damages in more than 100 houses and obstructed several roads leading Adrar province in the southern part of the country. Electricity grid and communications were cut off for several villages in the province.
