Egypt, Politics, 3/9/2005
The Egyptian authorities banned the distribution of al- Ghad magazine, mouthpiece of the opposition al-Ghad party led by Ayman Nour in which he announced his determination to launch a bid in the Presidential elections set on September this year.
The lawyer of the paper Ameer Salem said that the state security notified al-Ahram daily on Tuesday to stop circulation of "al-Ghad paper" adding that they have an agreement with al-Ahram on printing and circulation. The lawyer added "we knew after that that the paper will be frozen waiting to be edited by the attorney general."
Ayman Nour ( 40 year old) whose party presents him as a symbol for reforms and who is held in custody for investigation announced in this issue of the paper nominating himself for the presidential elections.
Nour was arrested in January under the charges of "falsifying official documents." A case which raised concern in human rights groups and the American administration.
Sources close to Ayam Nour talked about the request of his nomination for the "trustee committee" in the party, noting that the party will take part in the next presidential elections as a consolidation of what it called the "holy right" that the Egyptian people choose their president from among more than one candidate.
In addition to Ayman Nour, other names were mentioned including writer Muhammad Hasanin Haikal and the activist in human rights field Saad Eddine Ibrahim and writer Nawal Sadawi as possible candidates for the presidential elections.
Last week the Egyptian president announced amendment of article 76 of the Egyptian constitution which he proposed to the people and shoura council permitting competition for the post of the President of the republic among more than one candidate.
