Sahara is part and parcel of Morocco, former diplomat
Morocco, Politics, 3/8/2005

The international public opinion should know that the Sahara is part and parcel of Morocco and that the country can only exist through its Sahara, said Ahmed Snoussi, Moroccan former ambassador to the United Nations.

The diplomat was referring to the claims by the Algeria-backed Polisario front that seeks the separation of Morocco's Southern Provinces (known as the Sahara) from the rest of the country. Morocco retrieved the territory from the former colonial ruler, Spain, in 1975 under the Madrid Accords. "Moroccans should remain mobilized to defend this cause because the Sahara is part of the spiritual and historical capital of Morocco," said Snoussi in an interview published Tuesday by the "Le Matin du Sahara et du Maghreb."

The former ambassador underscored the national unanimity on the Sahara, saying Morocco has proposed a serious and concrete solution to this question.

Snoussi was speaking on the fringes of a seminar organized on March 7-9 by the Moroccan Diplomatic Club on the theme The Moroccan Sahara and national principles."

The seminar, he said, is meant to highlight some historical aspects of the Sahara question, while insisting on the need to defend this cause with wisdom to avoid "turbulences in the Maghreb region."

"In spite of what has been done against Morocco, we want our brothers to understand that we cannot continue to fight for something that belongs to us," he said in an allusion to Algeria that provides logistic, military and diplomatic support to the Polisario separatists.

Government members, diplomats, political leaders and university professors are taking part in the seminar.
