Morocco-Belgium, Local, 3/8/2005
1 out of 2 immigrants of Moroccan and Turkish origin applying for a job in Brussels and its neighbourhood are victims of discrimination in employment, said here Tuesday a report published by newspaper "La Derniere Heure."
The report run by the Regional Brussels Office of employment (ORBEM) showed that Immigrants of Moroccan and Turkish origin are reportedly subjected to employment discrimination which has increased during the last eight years.
"A quarter of the cases were due to an unfair differential treatment based on ethnic criteria" pointed out the survey whose findings will be published on March 16 during a colloquium on discrimination in employment.
The report showed that workers of Moroccan and Turkish origin do not enjoy the same chances to access to jobs nor to promotions and are stereotyped as blue-collar and low-paid workers.
"La Derniere Heure," recalled the case of a young immigrant woman, Rizlaine, who was told to put off her veil and change her name to Valerie if she wants to be recruited.
